Notes from the producer Marina Hurley...
Festival folk sing Bob Dylan is the third compilation of artists celebrating the talents of an influential songwriter, following on from festival folk sing Eric Bogle (2011) and festival folk sing Joni Mitchell (2010). The ambition and passion behind festival folk sing... is to enjoy how artists’ interpret their favourite songs. Performers from Australia's acoustic and folk music festivals were invited to record their favourite Bob Dylan song. This time we have a double CD to encompass the wide range of talent and style. In addition to Australian artists we have songs from the US (Hayward Williams), NZ (Gilly Darbey) and UK (Roy Bailey).
I would also like to make special mention of the two final recordings on Disc 2 from two wonderful and important artists who are no longer with us: Alistair Hulett with a version of Just Like a Woman and Trevor Lucas with a version of Forever Young. These tracks mirror the fantastic contemporary versions on Disc 1 recorded by Gilly Darbey – Just Like a Woman and Fallen Angels – Forever Young.
Alistair Hulett made a huge impact on the Australian folk music scene and his passing in January 2010 was a shock. He is sorely missed. In 2009, Alistair spoke of his great admiration of Bob Dylan and scolded me for not having heard Bob’s latest CD. This year, Alistair’s recording of Just Like a Woman was discovered by John Hamill, buried in Alistair’s studio.
Trevor Lucas was a Melbourne folk singer who travelled to England, joined Fairport Convention in its headiest days, then returned and used his experience to produce timeless Australian records, (e.g. Goanna’s Spirit Of Place and Redgum’s Caught in the Act. A heart attack took him far too young, and before his influence on Australian music was fully recognised. We complete this compilation with Trevor’s Just Like a Woman recorded live at the Melbourne Troubadour in 1982. The Melbourne Troubadour was a latter day singer-songwriter's concert venue (1978 to 1990), dedicated to the listeners, and a haven for the lovers of the gentler forms of music and entertainment. Consequently it attracted some of the best performers in the world - an impressive list of great names. The final track is also a tribute to the Troubadour Wine Bar venue – a venue that has lived many lives within many festivals and buildings; a venue that given a warm inviting stage and an enthusiastic listening audience to thousands of performers from Australia and around the world.
Again a huge thank you to Steve Vella & David Briggs for their engineering expertise that helped steer this project through to its conclusion; and to Chanel Lucas and Liz Frencham for being my sounding-boards.
    About the Troubadour Foundation...
