Notes from the producer Andrew Pattison...
festival folk sing Gordon Lightfoot is the fifth compilation of artists celebrating the talents of an influential songwriter, following on from festival folk sing Judy Small (2013), Bob Dylan (2012), Eric Bogle (2011) and Joni Mitchell (2010). Marina Hurley came up with the concept and produced all four of these albums. I put my hand up this time, on behalf of the original baby boomers who witnessed the 1960s’ folk revival and the evolution of the contemporary folk singer-songwriter, to acknowledge the phenomenal talents and productivity of Gordon Lightfoot, and to introduce his music to a later generation.

About Gordon Lightfoot...

Now in his late seventies and still touring, Gordon Lightfoot is regarded as Canada’s greatest songwriter and internationally as a folk-rock legend, playing forty concerts a year across the USA and his native Canada. With over twenty albums released on major labels, his body of work and number of high-quality songs puts him on a pedestal with a very small number who would be regarded as the greatest singer-songwriters of all time. Born in Orillia, Ontario, where he is now honoured by a four-metre-tall sculpture, Lightfoot was a boy soprano and played piano and drums. After learning guitar he moved to California in 1958 to study jazz composition and orchestration for two years. Missing Toronto, he moved back in 1960 and has lived in Canada ever since, although he has done much work in the USA and Europe. International recognition came with Canada’s Ian and Sylvia and New York’s Peter Paul and Mary both recording Early Morning Rain and For Lovin Me. The list of artists who have recorded Gordon Lightfoot songs quickly grew to include Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Glen Campbell, Barbra Streisand, Jimmy Buffett and over a hundred others. In 2003 Lightfoot was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honour.
