About Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon...
In 2009, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon was voted by ABC listeners as Australia’s most popular album of all time. “'The Dark Side of the Moon' was an expression of political, philosophical, humanitarian empathy that was desperate to get out," Pink Floyd's Roger Waters states at the start of the "Classic Albums" retrospective dedicated to the record. Revered as one of the greatest rock albums of all time, "Dark Side" -- which tackles weighty themes of greed, conflict, religion, mortality and mental illness -- was first released in March 17, 1973. ...It is estimated to have sold over 45 million copies worldwide, while its artistic legacy is arguably even greater”. www.billboard.com. About festival folk sing ...
Merging vocal richness and harmony with acoustic, electric and electronic sound, festival folk sing The Dark Side of the Moon is a spectacular compilation of artists celebrating one of the most iconic albums of our time: Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. The aim of festival folk sing... is to celebrate important singers and songwriters that influence Australian artists and music lovers. The idea is to choose a songwriter that we all love and invite artists that regularly perform at Australian festivals to record a track for a compilation CD. The concept was created by Marina Hurley in 2010, who wanted to capture the creative talents of the many artists who perform fantastic arrangements of other artists’ songs, yet often don’t record them. festival folk sing The Dark Side of the Moon is the sixth album of the festival folk sing… series, following on from festival folk sing Gordon Lightfoot (2016: produced by Andrew Pattison), festival folk sing Judy Small (2013), festival folk sing Bob Dylan (2012), festival folk sing Eric Bogle (2011) and festival folk sing Joni Mitchell (2010). Since 2010, over 200 leading Australian and international singers and musicians have donated their tracks to this project.
The festival folk sing… productions are initially funded by the music charity, the Troubadour Foundation. Then all profits of the sales of all albums are donated back to the foundation. The popularity of the CDs and concerts has helped the foundation significantly further it’s mission (see below) by increasing its funds through these sales. The Production Team
    Marina Hurley (Producer)
festival folk sing… The Dark Side of the Moon, is the 8th album I have produced (5th of the festival folk series) and my most adventurous project by far. I have imagined a folk/acoustic recreation of The Dark Side of the Moon for years. We’ve ended up with more than that. This recreation crosses many musical boundaries, with arrangements from reggae to psychedelic trance to folk to rock to bluegrass. While musical genres grow more diverse and specialised, at the same time, artists and music-lovers are increasingly ready to cross the boundaries of musical genres. As with the original, this album is a journey and designed to be played from start to finish. I invited over 15 musicians to take up the challenge of producing fresh arrangements of this iconic album. I allocated different tracks to different artists, with some taking a lead role in singing and arranging, and others supporting and cross-pollinating the album with their amazing voices and instrumental talents. The skill, professionalism and creativity of everyone has been fantastic, especially the amazing skill and enduring patience of Steve Vella (maestro recording engineer); and Carl Pannuzzo, (creative energizer-bunny) who took the big, shiny Dark Side of the Moon ball and ran with it. Carl's massive enthusiasm, inspiration, musical skills, and efforts in nutting out everyone's contributions, while also putting his hand up to herd musicians into the studio, has been incredible. Thanks also to David Briggs for not only doing a great job mastering, but for being supportive, extremely efficient and astute. I am extremely grateful to the Executive Producer Andrew Pattison and the Troubadour Foundation for having faith in my ideas by providing seed money to support these projects. I, and all artists involved in the festival folk sing… projects, volunteered our time and effort in support of the Troubadour Foundation and all profits of festival folk sing… CD sales are donated back to the foundation.

    Carl Pannuzzo (Musical Director)
The Great Gig in the Sky was probably the most daunting prospect to cover, but thanks to Marina's vision on this one to get two incomparable and wonderful singers in Penny and Parvyn to create corridors of dialogue from different studio sessions, begat some amazing conversation, making it appear that they were in the same room jamming. We exacerbated the cross-cultural arrangement by having the vocalists’ respective partners accompanying them with drum solos - myself on kit and Josh Bennett on Tabla. Josh also masterfully bookends the track with some gorgeous Sitar and Dilruba. Money - ok so I got a little carried away, to the point that it is barely about the song or the vocal anymore as much as the incredible taste and playfulness of all the musicians to both fulfil all my requests and add their own brilliant improvisational flavours. Jodi Moore plays the role of the LearJet taking us on quite the journey, ably supported by the band, in particular the premeditated imagination of Peter Vadiveloo having already laid down the drums weeks before, as though he knew what she was going to play! Brain Damage features Penny Larkins to make a raw and impressionistic treatment of this song. I put a harp out on a windy hill to play the state of mind of the song and replaced the guitar with piano. Having avoided the choir up to this point, it comes in full force at the end. Eclipse: I wanted to shape the original hammond organ that begins this track to give it a sense of anthem and herald the final culmination of all the voices from the album, with an instrumental to close the album. Throughout the rest of the CD, being able to have input to some finer detail, was very rewarding, be it via some found sounds in the studio, the cameos from Louis, or working with Steve Vella's incredible knack for the 'drag and drop' to find a perfect placement of an effect or phrase. All up, this was one hell of a fun experiment.

Steve Vella (Engineer: Recording & Mixing)
Steve Vella had been involved with all festival folk sing… productions and with Dark Side of the Moon, Steve recorded most of the tracks at his Dog & Bear studio in Trentham Victoria. Steve’s patient, calm demeanour and fast, efficient manner make him a joy to work with in the studio. Steve has recorded dozens of musicians including Spooky Men’s Choral, Kristina Olsen, Doug De Vries, Chris While and Julie Matthews, Andrew Winton and Nick Charles. “Being involved with this version of Dark Side of the Moon has been incredibly rewarding, and working with all the artists to build the amazing arrangements you hear has been a huge effort by all involved. When Carl Pannuzzo said to me "tuba and sitar" I knew I was in for some incredible recording sessions. Keep your ears open - there's a few audio easter eggs - finding much like the original!”

    David Briggs (Engineer: Mastering)
David Briggs is an Australian musician and record producer (incl. Australian Crawl & Russell Morris) and well-known guitarist in the Little River Band (1976 – 1981), penning two of their hit singles. David now works as a recording engineer and producer in Melbourne, having worked on thousands of records since starting the Production Workshop Recording Studio in 1979. David is also a lecturer at Victoria University, Melbourne, teaching Applied Acoustic Design and Advanced Digital Audio. “The Festival Folk series of CDs has featured the songs of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Eric Bogle, Gordon Lightfoot and Judy Small, with new creative twists and turns injected into the songs by an eclectic group of Australian performers. Once again with the festival folk sing The Dark Side of the Moon release we are reminded what a great record this was from Pink Floyd, but led on a new journey of performing exploration of the songs, whilst retaining the essence of what is The Dark Side of the Moon. I have mastered all of the releases and never fail to enjoy the performances, and I am always surprised with the fresh approach to the songs. Congratulations to all the Festival Folk performers, and also the talent and vision of Producer Marina Hurley and Engineer Steve Vella.”

Across the album: Voiceovers/narration/gurgles by Louis Richard Bradley & Roger Montgomery
