Vin was his own man, a one off. When asked about his musical influences he couldn't really think of any except maybe Bob Dylan as a genre influence and songwriter Graeme Miles who showed Vin that songs didn't always have to paint a pretty picture or tell a love story. And so Vin's lyrics became all important to him, his style completely original and his humour the perfect counterbalance.

Vin was a Teessider through and through but his second home was Australia. He loved Australia and his biannual tours were some of the happiest times of his life. Vin would have loved it that his music is living on and that the proceeds from this CD will go to The Troubadour Foundation to help other musicians and performers achieve their goals.

Every single time that Vin gave a concert, he gave it everything. He gave his very best. That is because as we all know, he was.........."the very best". Pat Garbutt

Vin was a truly unique and wonderful performer and delivered a brilliant and bizarre mix of passionate songs with strongly serious messages interspersed with hilarious and often completely daft patter. After playing at my winery folk festival at my winery (just outside of Melbourne), I landed the job of coordinating his Australian tours; an easy task because those who knew him wanted to see him every time he was available. He was immensely popular both on and off stage. We didn’t know it at the time, but the show captured on this CD was Vin’s last ever performance in Australia. About fifteen months later his long battle with heart troubles finally took him from us. Such a loss, aged just 69. I feel so honoured to have been able to work with him for twenty years. One of a kind. Super special. Truly unique. Andrew Pattison, Burke & Wills Winery, Heathcote, Victoria.

With his repertoire of self-composed and traditional folk songs sung with passion and commitment, hilarious introductions and stories, a distinctive voice and a mop of hair that either hung in ringlets or resembled an untidy haystack, Vin Garbutt was one of the most popular singers on the British folk music circuit. Dubbed the Teesside troubadour, Vin found inspiration for his songs from his Irish mother’s family, as well as from the industrial landscape of his home town and stories of its townspeople. In addition to his skilful guitar playing, Vin was a highly accomplished player of the whistle, with a wide repertoire of Irish tunes. Excerpts from Vin Garbutt obituary The Guardian, June 2017
