Notes from the producer Marina Hurley...
festival folk sing Judy Small is the fourth compilation of artists celebrating the talents of an influential songwriter, following on from festival folk sing Bob Dylan (2012), festival folk sing Eric Bogle (2011) and festival folk sing Joni Mitchell (2010).
The ambition and passion behind festival folk sing 'is to enjoy different artists’ interpretations of their favourite Judy Small songs. Judy’s influence on singers and songwriters has been very strong. Two notable bands from the early 90’s One Step Forward and Tangled Web reunited especially to record their favourite Judy Small song. In addition to well-known Australian artists who have recorded a track for this CD, we also have contributions from Jez Lowe and Peggy Seeger.

    About Judy Small...
Judy Small is one of the most influential singer/songwriters to come out of Australia and an Australian folk music icon. After more than 30 years in the music business she is still going strong, although she sings less frequently since she went back to her second love, the law in 1997. Judy grew up in the small seaside town of Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, and was inspired by the folk music boom of the 1960s. When she got her first guitar at the age of 14, it wasn't the Beatles or The Beach Boys she wanted to emulate: it was those big-voiced women like Joan Baez, Mary Travers of Peter Paul and Mary, and Judith Durham of The Seekers, who sang songs about real people and real issues. Judy Small, the "grande dame" of Australian folk music is as passionate as ever about her music. Judy has released twelve albums, and has hundreds of songs and a song book to her credit. Her music is now available on iTunes.

“Judy Small was one of the first singers I heard at One-C-One and I was captivated by her music with the strength, optimism, humour and integrity that shone through her songs and her stories of real people and real life issues. I loved the idea that songs could be so powerful and articulate, moving and gut-wrenching; and I realised, on listening back to old albums in preparation for this project, what an important influence and inspiration she has been to me in my life and music. Thank you, Judy!” Jane Thompson
